The Chevra Kaddisha (Burial Society) for the Jewish community in Bristol was founded in 1743. Members volunteer to ensure funerals follow Orthodox Jewish practices and recognize the authority of the Chief Rabbi of Great Britain and the Commonwealth.
Anyone with a halachically Jewish deceased can arrange burial, regardless of synagogue membership. Burial plots can be reserved at any time.
As of 2025, funeral fees are £4,000 for members of the Bristol Hebrew Congregation and £5,000 for non-members, excluding transport or headstone costs.
The Society works with local undertakers, HG Harris funeral directors in Staple Hill, who provide hearses, gravediggers, and a Tehara, or body-preparation room.
The Society maintains three cemeteries: the historic Barton Road cemetery (1743), the Oakdene Avenue cemetery (1923), and the new Memorial Woodlands cemetery in South Gloucestershire.
Memorial stones are the responsibility of the deceased’s executors. In accordance with the guidelines of the Memorial Woodlands, all stones at must be flat to allow grass cutting and maintenance.
Please note. The Bristol Jewish Burial Society is a registered charity, operating independently of the Bristol Hebrew Congregation and Park Row Synagogue.
